A Guidebook to Northern California Beaches
Northern California beaches offer fun outdoor recreation opportunities for hikers, campers, birdwatchers and more.
Experience the California Coast: a Guide to Beaches and Parks in Northern California
is an easy to use guide to the beaches, trails, parks and more, from Marin County to the Oregon border. It was created by the California Coastal Commission and published by University of California Press.
The Introduction covers lots of important information that will make your visit to the beach safer and more fun. You'll learn how to be a Coastal Steward by respecting the natural resources and wildlife of coastal areas. This includes things like "Tidepool Etiquette". You'll also find safety information and general recommendations for visiting the California coast.
The rest of the book is organized by county: Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Sonoma and Marin. Each section includes general information about the county, followed by more specific information on each beach or park in the county and one or more maps of the area. Details are given for more than 341 beaches, parks and other facilities. Each area also has charts that list the parks and beaches and then list whether there is a rocky or sandy beach, the presence of trails, visitor centers, restrooms, campgrounds, and so on. The book also includes many beautiful photos of Northern California beaches and parks. My favorite parts of
Experience the California Coast
are the many feature articles that describe local plant and animal life, historical sites and many other interesting tid bits. You'll learn about the geology of the area, including the San Andreas Fault. Study pictures of plants and wildlife and learn where to spot them. Find out about conservation efforts in coastal areas. This really is a good resource, full of beautiful photos and helpful information. If you're planning a visit to any of the many Northern California beaches, I highly recommend "Experience the California Coast: a Guide to Beaches and Parks in Northern California".
