California Campgrounds - Outdoor Fun
California campgrounds are a great way to enjoy the out of doors on your family vacation. Whether you are travelling by car or rv, enjoy tenting or cabins, or like primiteve camping or a luxury experience, California has the right campground for you.
In recent years we have stayed at KOA campgrounds, because many of them have cabins and they are conveniently located to a lot of fun activities. KOA campgrounds are very family friendly. Amenities may include swimming pools, hot tubs, playgrounds, bike rentals, arcades, petting zoos, karaoke, miniature golf and more. And if you forgot something there is a camp store with camping supplies, souvenirs, firewood, even marshmallows! There are about 30 KOA campgrounds in California, all the way from San Diego to Crescent City. You'll find them in the desert, in the mountains, near lakes and near the beach.
Willits
We had a shady tent site at the Willits KOA a few years ago. We stayed for two nights and had a great time. We played a couple of rounds of miniature golf (free of charge!), enjoyed the pool and enjoyed watching the karaoke singers after dinner on Friday night. The campground staff were very helpful. They answered questions about the area and brought out one of those car starter things when the battery died in our van.

From Willits it's a beautiful drive through redwoods to the California coast (about an hour) where we visited the Pt. Cabrillo Lighthouse, bummed around Ft. Bragg and enjoyed the dramatic views of the Pacific along highway 1.
Petaluma
The Petaluma, California campground is the closest KOA to San Francisco, the Bay Area and Wine Country. We camped there last Spring with our Cub Scout Pack and had a blast. We tent camped in the group area on that trip, but we had plenty of time to explore and enjoy the rest of the campground.
We swam in the pool (which is heated), played on the playground, took a hayride and visited the animals in the petting zoo. The playground is fairly new and rather large. The boys had a great time playing on the slides and climbing structures. We also rented bikes and explored the campground. There are a lot of cabins and tent sites. There are trees everywhere so it's nice and shady. There is also a sports court, an arcade with video games and other entertainment and a hot tub.
Cabins
We haven't stayed in the KOA cabins at any of the California campgrounds, but we have stayed in them at many other locations on roadtrips. I like the cabins best because they're so easy. You get a double bed and a bunk bed. All you have to do is unroll your sleeping bags and you're done.

Where it might be needed, the cabins have a heater and/or an air conditioning unit. There is a picnic table and grill or fire pit outside and a porch swing. They are very comfortable and perfect for the family who loves to camp but doesn't like the work of setting up a tent for a short stay (like me!).Some of the KOAs also have 2 bedroom cabins and lodges that have more amenities and sleep more people. Some KOAs (including Petaluma) are adding Loft Lodges that include a bathroom, kitchen, master bedroom and a loft for the kids.
Other California Campgrounds
There are many other campgrounds in California. We have stayed at several
State Park
campgrounds which are very affordable. There are also many private campgrounds, but these are sometimes harder to find. The internet is a great tool for finding them.If you are a AAA member, you can get the AAA Campbook which has listings for many campgrounds and rv parks. You can also join the Good Sam Club for RV Tips, Camping Discounts & More! . And of course, as we find fun places to stay, we'll add them to this site.
