Visit California Beaches for Fun in the Sun

California beaches - there are lots of them: sandy beaches, rocky beaches, small beaches, big beaches. You get the picture. Visiting California for a family vacation probably includes a visit to the beach.

You can visit California beaches just about any time of year. We've had some of our most interesting and fun trips in November and February. Even when it's a bit cool, going to the beach is a blast!

You can do all kinds of activities at the beach, too. We've collected rocks and studied seashells. We've photographed birds and beautiful scenery. Many beaches have hiking trails, picnic areas, visitor centers and more.

California Beaches Safety

When you visit a beach there are a few rules you should follow to avoid problems and stay safe. I know most of these seem like common sense, but it's amazing how fast things change on a beach, and how quickly someone can get into trouble.

These are just a few things we've noticed or read about. There are other dangers present at beaches, and being careful of your children and aware of your surroundings is vital.

Keep an eye on the water at all times. Even at low tide waves can surprise you and currents can pull you or little ones into deep water. You can also get cut off from the main beach if the tide comes in and traps you in a rocky inlet.

Monterey Beach Tidepool Keep an eye on those little ones at all times too. You don't want them getting into the water alone, or eating rocks or getting their hands into animal droppings or worse. We've found dead animals on the beach on several visits and besides being disgusting, it's not safe for little ones to get around. Be careful about jellyfish washed ashore too - you could get stung!

Paying attention to the weather is also important. You shouldn't fly a kite or go swimming in the rain or a thunderstorm. Fog can roll in quickly too, changing the amount of light and visibility on a beach in a matter of minutes.

Weather also affects the temperature of the sand - shoes will protect little feet from hot sand (and sharp rocks or other objects). Wearing layers is good for variable weather when the temperature can drop quickly and leave you shivering.

It really is amazing how fast things change on the beach. My dad got drenched once at a beach in Mendocino. He was taking a picture of the bluffs and had his back to the waves. Another time in Monterey, Esbon and I had to wade ashore when the tide came in past the rocks we'd been climbing on.

Our Favorite California Beaches

Rodeo Beach Rocks There are a lot of beaches in California. We haven't been to many in Southern California. In fact, we haven't been to any down there in recent years. I know I visited several as a child, but all I remember is hot sand.

As for Northern California, we do have a few favorite beaches. We like Rodeo Beach for rock collecting, and because it's easy to get to. Drakes Beach is also a lot of fun, but at high tide there isn't much beach at all. Limantour Beach is great for a sunset bonfire. Stinson Beach and Muir Beach are fun sandy beaches.

We've also been to beaches in Morro Bay, Monterey, Pacifica and Mendocino.

I've written a review of Experience the California Coast: A Guide to Beaches and Parks in Northern California . This is a great guide to beaches, hikes, picnic areas and more. The California Coastal Commission has also published Beaches and Parks from Monterey to Ventura .

California beaches really do have something to offer everyone. Whether you like to play in the water, build sandcastles, play Frisbee or fly a kite, sunbathe, picnic or hike, there's a California Beach that's just right for your vacation.
